TOTTENHAM'S STREET PARTIES -80th ANNIVERSARY V.E DAY (1945 -2025) |
Like many towns
and cities across the nation the residents of Tottenham celebrated in the streets for
one
of the most memorable occasions in the 2oth Century. The end of hostilities in WW2 and the
Victory in Europe (V.E DAY) celebrations in 1945 Here are few photographs that capture these moments in Tottenham's history. Should you have any photographs from your streets then please do get in touch and let us have copies to add to the collection. BE SURE TO SCROLL THOUGH TO THE END WHERE YOU WILL FIND THE ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER HEADLINES FROM 8th MAY 1945 |

“THIS IS YOUR VICTORY”: V.E DAY SPEECH, MINISTRY OF HEALTH
BUILDING God bless you all. This is your victory, victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history we have never seen a greater day than this. Everyone, man or woman, has done their best. Everyone has tried, none have flinched. Neither the long years, nor the dangers, nor the fierce attacks of the enemy, have in any way weakened the unbending resolve of the British nation. God bless you all. |

YOUR MEMORIES FROM V.E DAY Here are just a few memories from V.E Day in Tottenham PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IF YOU WISH TO ADD MORE ! |
CHRISTINE LEWIS (Nee SWAIN) SUMMERHILL ROAD
One of my earliest memories of Summerhill Road was the
V.E Day party in Summerhill Road. I would have been very young, but I
can recall being with my closest friend Connie Corbyn who lived opposite
our family in Summerhill Road. I can remember being frightened when
walking up the road to suddenly see this effigy sitting on the wall of
one of the houses. I did not know at the time that this effigy was of
Adolf Hitler. This effigy was later placed on top of a large bonfire in
the middle of the street.
I can also recall my Nan and Grandad helping to set-up
the tables for the children’s tea party. There was so much food, and I
think this was probably the first time I had tasted Jelly !
The only names from the Fryatt Road celebrations that I
can remember are the two blonde girls, the Bristow sisters, one next to
me and her sister front row second right. No mistaking them as they both
looked the same.
They lived opposite us and I played with them until we
moved along to the Roundway due to our house having bomb damage.
The dog in the picture was called Butch. With regard to
the street party, I can only recall being taken out to look at what
would later be the bonfire, with lots of ladies doing the ‘Hokey-Kokey’. ANTILL ROAD: Children are indulged by parents and neighbours alike as they celebrate with their own street party at Antill Road in Tottenham on V.E Day in 1945. They would now grow up to enjoy the benefits of a long lasting peace in Europe. SUTHERLAND ROAD A street party to celebrate
V.E Day at Sutherland Road in Tottenham.
Residents string up bunting and gather for tea and cake to rejoice in
the news of an end to the war in Europe. Happy memories
are recalled: ' Everybody gave a bit. If you had a few currants or
sultanas, whatever you had, a couple of spoonfuls of flour, everybody
made it go a bit further. You contributed what you could' |
